Here is the Lorain County married to a causeway at Vieques. The pusher boats' call signs were "Bubble Gum". Thanks to Cap Dave.

Here are some great shots of the Lorain County on her 1959 Med Cruise and of the Graham County at the 'T Piers' at Little Creek from Mark Ehasz. They show his dad Leonard T. Ehasz.

Lorain County Pride

She was one of the best performing T's in the Atlantic Fleet, had Gunnery E's, Engineering E's, Operations E's. Discipline was good (you could count court-martials on one hand). After a short time onboard you could sense the high morale and the can-do attitude. She looked good. The brass was polished, the floors buffed, the decks clean and painted. She was chosen for the COMPHIBLANT Change of Command ceremony and to host the Secretary of the Navy. Why was that? A big reason is the spirit of the first sailors on board, the commissioning crew. They established the feeling and expectations. They really believed there was "None Better". They are listed in the commissioning pamphlet and all of us owe them our thanks. Carry On.

Short History

Lorain County (LST-1177 (q.v.) was named after a county in Ohio. She was laid down on 9 August 1956 at Lorain, Ohio, by the American Shipbuilding Co.; launched on 22 June 1957; sponsored by Mrs. Albert D. Baumhart, Jr.; and commissioned on 3 October 1958, Lt. Comdr. Robert E. DuBois in command. From the time of commissioning, Lorain County spent her entire period of active service with the Amphibious Force, Atlantic Fleet. For 14 years, she engaged in amphibious operations along the east coast of the United States supplemented with extended opera-tions in the Caribbean and regular deployments as a unit of the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean. Decommissioned on 1 September 1972, the tank landing ship was assigned to the National Defense Reserve Fleet at Norfolk, Va.
